There are people who need to fight history tooth and nail, because it doesn't square with their vision of America, the perfect. I have seen people on SI not only varnish (or white wash) US history, but white wash the entire history of the Western World. It's fascinating, as long as you don't have to interact with people who feel that way. Michele's speech would be deeply frightening to people who don't like the way the world is changing, and the way the perception of race and racism is changing, and that makes her speech that much more important. She's an eloquent speaker, and a perfect speaker for that subject. I feel sorry for people who can't afford to see the world as it is- it must cause a lot of stress to live in denial.
