One note on the interview with Roy: it seems to me that Nixon's Southern Strategy and Reagan's "The guv'ment is the problem" were both more important than Buckley and Goldwater, but they are all pieces of the puzzle that became the Reagan era GOP (along with the evangelicals).

And that is the puzzle that Trump is dismantling, just as the bizarre puzzle that FDR put together in the 1930s was exploded by the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s.

In both cases, it was the South that was the "swing" factor.

In fact, the South has been, in important ways, the swing factor throughout American history. Mainly due to slavery and its consequences, even after the Civil War.

I am thinking out loud here.

I recall Arthur Schlessinger had a thesis about 30 year cycles in American politics; that every 30 years important changes occur.
