-- Evan, your first question about ira's - there's no end of year tax issue. All the money taxable when you withdraw. So what you do inside the a/c along the way is irrelevant.

-- Last day for tax losses: could be today (12/31/97) or could be t+3 which you correctly point out is 12/26/97. You can use trade date or settlement date for tax purposes. Once you start on one method, you must stick with it. Can't pick and choose.
