Prior to the repeal of the Smith-Mundt Act "Voice of America" and other news networks operated by the US State Department could only be distributed outside of the United States.

With the repeal of Smith-Mundt Act three years ago Americans can now listen to these broadcasts online. They're of great interest to immigrants who have come to America from countries like Somalia where the only source of news comes from the Somali government which does not allow foreign journalists to operate.

If you're fearful that listening to the foreign language or English language broadcasts by "Voice of America" will turn you into a government slave, I would urge you not to click on this link and listen to these broadcasts online.

The Smith-Mundt Act never applied to the military, so like other large corporations the US military has never been prohibited from creating favorable coverage by providing use of bases, personnel and equipment for those creating films and other media the Pentagon approves of. The US military has also always been able to pay to have documentaries and other propaganda made to maintain their image among the American public.

CNBC is one major provider of favorable programming paid for and or created by major companies to extol their own history and virtues while glossing over problems an independent journalist would focus time on.
