I used that as an example to make the point. And while it may not have been officially legal, it certainly wasn't always prosecuted if taught someone a lesson who needed it. And there are a lot of places still in which gays are beaten because someone is offended by them. Violence is a harm directed towards you. It does not have to be physical. If you are boycotted in your neighborhood, depending on your circumstances, it could a much greater harm than getting a beating. The talk we were having was about tolerance and how challenging it really is to live it.
