The trouble with enlightened authoritarianism is Trump. There's no guarantee that the one who rises to the top will be enlightened.

Yeah, I don't think the people went Mao. Unless you're going back to Chiang Kai Shek, at which time there were many other issues percolating. Massive famine, Japanese invasion, those kind of things. Mao delivered some pretty awful things in return, I think it was somewhat fortuitous China managed to turn around as quickly as it did after he kicked the bucket.

China has come remarkably far, but they got big issues too. Like Mars, China needs women.
