i don't agree with the latter part of your statement.. most brokerages are supposed to be concentrating on making a market and or brokering the stock.The paperwork to take shares out of circulation is tedious, tiresome and boring, and in most cases a poor play for the owner.. if he brings the shares home, and the market begins to become bearish.. he is stuck with the loss.
if the short interest is high and there are enough people out there that will hold their shares.. and assign them as unshortable{which means they own them for cash}then that can squeeze shorts. not a good move for a guy with less than 1% of the float to do in an attempt to manipulate the market imo..

Hmm, maybe I'll change my opinion of this stock. It's only weak companies that have shareholders saying "CALL IN YOU CERTS". I keep all my long term stocks in a margin account. Shorting doesn't cause a price decline. Anyone who wants is welcome to borrow the shares of any company I own and sell them.
