Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a former prisoner of war, delivered the sharpest criticism by any Republican senator to date of Donald Trump over his public tangle with the parents of a Muslim U.S. Army captain killed in Iraq. Mr. McCain didn’t rescind his support for the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, but issued a blistering statement Monday morning saying he “cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement.”

“While our party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us,” Mr. McCain said in his statement.
