I do quite a bit of of trading around a core position, which is what you may see on an almost daily basis. Some of this core position is on margin, and the trading profits as well as the dividend more than covers carrying costs and reduces the margin balance.. I have a negotiated margin rate of 4% with a leading brokerage. Today's purchase was adding to my core position, out of reserve cash in an IRA, and is the first core purchase since the day following the completion of the acquisition. The bulk of this core position was built prior to deal closure.
