Paul,

What about 3 months, or 4 or 17?

3 or 4 months wouldn't be long enough to entice Intel to lower their price to compaq. 17 months is just plain silly. But based on life cycles of processors, 9 months sounds pretty accurate. It was definitely a long enough time frame for Intel to feel secure. They didn't want consumers thinking that it was OK to buy AMD because the #1 PC manufacturer had endorsed the K6. But 9 months down the road, that's a different story. Now that I rethink this, maybe they said no K6 based Presarios in 1997. Are you sure Compaq's K6 based machine is available on the shelf today? Or will it ship starting in January? That sounds like something Intel would request from Compaq. And believe me, Intel is not stupid. None of this is in writing. Its a gentlemen's contract between executives.
