>>>Maybe that's because 1984(the concept) didn't happen on szschheduule<<<

Well, remember he was talking about the entire world. I think 1984 was a boom year for torture and starvation and propaganda in at least 2/3 of the world. Try Iraq, China, USSR, Eastern Europe, Chile, el Salvador etc. You should recall that Orwell was not warning the democrats. He was a lapsed college socialist who had realized what a monster Stalin had really been. He was warning the left not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Meanwhile in America, Huxley's 'Brave New World' continues to be the better analogy (It was written specifically about an American future of course). A happy elite bunch of technocratic hedonist yuppies lord it over an intellectually repressed underclass, remember that one?? With conventional wisdom and class self-interest applying the pressure as much as propaganda. And of course if you run into the wrong people while doing the wrong thing... As recently ripped off by the movie 'Gattaca'.

Anyway, these things are warnings, not futurist prognostications.

Oops, slipped into pedant mode there again. Sorry.
