The Dutch and ice are taller in reglaciation than the iMilanese. North of 40 degrees latitude the water is colder than the average water within 20 degrees of the equator, just as the average person in Holland is taller than the average person in Milan. What matters up north in Sweden is not the average global temperature, but the temperature when it's really cold in winter. When it gets cold enough to maintain ice even through summer, then there is runaway reglaciation. The tipping point is reached and the reflected light from snow keeps Sweden frozen all year. The point about Wanaka and those other lovely lakes is that when they are reglaciated, it doesn't matter to people there that Fiji is just a bit cooler, or not cooler. While new record highs are just weather, due to the fact that there has been nearly 1 degree average warming since the Little Ice Age, record lows are not so easily explained and imply cooling. It is more likely to not be just weather when record cold happens. In human height terms if the Milanese conquered Holland and replaced all men with Milanese, the average heigh would be Milanese height. If after a few generations it was observed that there were some record tall Holland Milanese, it might not change the average but it would suggest that there were tall genes gaining ascendancy in the gene pool. The genetic reglaciation might be underway. The genetic weather might be turning to genetic climate. BTW, my theory of tall Dutch is that evolution is relentless, cruel and merciless, quite happy to do ethnic cleansing even though it's currently politically incorrect. So when a drunk short Dutch guy falls in a canal, he is removed from the gene pool. But when a tall one falls in, he can go on to mate with the drowned guy's girlfriends. It might also have helped when the Roman Empire decided to take over Holland but found that a huge guy wielding a broadsword was a considerable danger. That's like Maori men, who killed each other by bashing opposition heads in with rocks, evolved to be pretty big and tough. The little guys lost to the big 'uns. The skinny and short English with bows and arrows, and rifles evolved to be small - the big soldier presents a big target so a near miss for a little guy is a direct hit for a big one. "Keep your head down" is easier for a short bloke. Imagine a short bloke in rank and file, surrounded by taller men. He would be nicely hidden from incoming arrows unless he was in the front row, which might be where they put the shorties for all I know. There are many variables that affect climate, not just CO2, just as there are many variables that affect height. Sexual selection also favours tall blokes "Tall dark and handsome" is a combo desired by women, rather than "short, fat and stupid". Mqurice
