Dick: I believe it expires after 7 years. (losses)
You can carry forward losses for seven years, and use them against gains. (short or long term).
However after 7 years they expire. I do not believe there is a limit. In other words a million dollar loss can be applied against a million dollar gain.
It can be taken over the 7 year period.
If you have no gains, you can deduct 3,000 for seven years, but after the eighth year the unused portion is lost.
