Interesting article.

As I read it, it is saying that 32% of retail was sub 1000. Someone else said retail is about 50% of sales. So total sub 1000 would be about 16% of sales. Not too scary sounding.

The key thing is that intel had to shift to design specifically for the sub 1000 market, rather than being able to design for high end and let price trickle down. Questions are raised as to whether sub 1000 percent will grow, particularly if business becomes a significant buyer. So the article isn't exactly all roses.

But its not too hard to imagine both the high end and low end growing. Merced especially appears to have the potential to expand the high end sales and balance out margins, if adopted quickly enough and NT5 or 6 is ready/stable. Solaris good move on Andy's part. A question I have is what is the quantity of intel server sales now. Ie. just how much would this area have to grow.
