I think the author of that other article on Semiwiki was reacting more to Intel's business strategies rather than the specific technical merits of their solution. One could argue they did the same with x86 vs "better" architectures in the PC world. They won based on process technology and business practices. They will try to do the same with XPoint. It pays to remember that Intel was once an early leader in DRAM, but decided to abandon that to the Japanese DRAMaraui of the time. Now that PC CPUs lack growth, Intel is casting about for other options, and memory is one that looks attractive again if they can do something disruptive. But they will try to make it proprietary if their history is any guide...
