"Capital Report: More AIDS Spending"
USA Today (12/31/97) P. 5A
On Tuesday, White House spokesman Joe Lockhart confirmed a
New York Times article that reported President Clinton would seek
a 35 percent boost in spending for AIDS drug assistance programs.
Clinton is expected to ask for $385 million for the programs for
fiscal year 1999--a $100 million increase over the current fiscal
year--and for a $165 million raise in funding for a larger AIDS
treatment program, bringing that total to over $1.3 billion.
