Well, folks, FWIW, I have to say that I have now reached the point of doubting that fonix's technology is of significant (i.e., much better than what's already out there) value, for the following reasons:

1. After reading throught the link I posted here a couple days ago, multiple articles make no mention of fonix, and no mention of how HMM looks like a dead end. I have trouble believing that a magazine which focuses on this field would ignore or be oblivious of fonix if they had the Holy Grail.

2. The absence of any deals other than Siemens. Frank and I have debated this one, but fonix has clearly said they've been in discussions with lots of big dogs for several months now, and has only Siemens to show for it. The bulls say this is typical for a small, new company; I don't think so, seeing what Lernout & Hauspie has accomplished in the same time. Maybe fonix is too small, too slow, and too unimportant to ever be a major player in this game.

3. The slow progress of the Siemens deal - still no commitment to any dollars, even on Siemens' part. Now this may come eventually, as may other licensing agreements, but the longer it takes, the less likely it is that this is an important focus for any of the licensees, meaning the less likely it is that the technology is significant, making it very unlikely to ever generate big bucks.

1998 is the year speech recognition will become part of everyone's consciousness. Fonix will either make a big splash this year, or will become completely irrelevant. I'm now firmly in the camp that's betting on the latter (though I'm not putting any money on it - still on the sidelines in that regard).
