His objective is to reach a deal but not by giving away the store. His tactics were apparent in the earliest days of his candidacy. For example, "We're going to build the wall and Mexico is going to pay for it." Mexico is not going to pay for it. But if he does it, they're going to help pay for it. And they'll be glad to get off with that. Same thing with some other things he has been ridiculed for like the bluster on tariffs. This is a way of getting what he wants -- which is fairness -- by threatening big. I don't know why people can't see this, but they can't. Although I'm not that familiar with Chamberlain's history, I do know he had a couple of really big failures in this area. I don't think Trump is a failure when it comes to negotiating. For me, it is the biggest single reason for supporting him, I would imagine (having watched the Obama negotiating disaster unfold).
