When did evangelicals in the US ever call for laws punishing people from leaving Christianity? What is likely is you would, given your druthers, establish atheism by law. Some prominent atheists, Richard Dawkins for one, want to criminalize instructing children in their parent's religion. And we see liberals attempting to use the law to force Christians to do things that violate their religious beliefs ... as in the Hobby Lobby case, where Hobby Lobby's health insurance offered over a dozen different birth control methods but balked at one or two which involved abortifacients. The Obama administration tried to destroy the company over that.
