Alan, I believe that the Quartz shortage is more in the imagination of some of the gurus than in fact. Making optical systems of acceptable quality is still pushing the limits of today's technology. A partial discussion is in SVGI's 10K filed yesterday (available on Edgar). To my knowledge, the MicraScan III uses a combination of mirrors and lenses. Ian.

RE: Lenses and Quartz Does anyone remember the name of the European optical quartz manufacurer? Do the stepper manufacturers actually make the lenses from the quartz blanks themselves, or do they buy the finished lenses from another vendor? The European Quartz company may be Heraeus (sp?) ASML buys its lenses from Zeiss in Germany. Canon makes its own. I'm not sure about Nikon. James Word
