There is an old adage in Guatemala that the first 12 days of January reflect climatologically the character of the 12 months of the year. Why not markets too? Today is a day of celebration, partying, and general regaling. What might this portend for the markets? The stock market rally will fizzle, then slide dramatically on fundamentals. Why? Our friend Louis on Wall Street Week updates us every year on the score--NFC Superbowl win = Dow gain for the year. The past 13 years have all seen NFC Superbowl victories, beginning with the '49ers 38-16 delivering of the Dolphin's head on a pan in 1985, a year now hallowed in the annals of Bulldom. The average score in those 13 games has, indeed, been NFC 38, AFC 16 and look how the Dow has responded. But, in four weeks THE NFC WILL LOSE THE SUPERBOWL! There is too much Irrational Exuberance in the Bays (Green Bay, San Francisco Bay, even Tampa Bay). Should the Packers lose this Sunday, THE MARKET WILL PLUNGE! Then recover. Should San Fransisco also lose THERE WILL BE NO RECOVERY (save the unlikely event of an NFC Superbowl win thereafter). If the NFC loses the Superbowl it will cause panic in the Markets--SELL ALL DOW STOCKS AT YOUR FIRST OPPORTUNITY! People, do not confuse me with Elaine Garzarelli!

ps If the NFC wins SB XXXII buy stocks as usual. Go Packers ;)
