I don't know if I will go that far but I did a thorough review of all my 1997 trades today for tax purposes. The surprising result after looking at all my long and short positions, open and closed, was that I did much, much better shorting than going long. The key factor was making fewer mistakes and not sticking with losing positions (like QNTM, me too) - a rule I will apply diligently in 1998, both short and long.

I've seen comments around SI which show people up anywhere from a few percent to more than 100%. I doubt that anecdotes will tell you much. That's like comparing your age to that of someone who just died; you may feel better or worse, but you could still get run over by a truck the next time you step out on the street.

The trick seems to be to look carefully first.

Enough metaphors. Let's all make some serious $$$ in 1998. Last year is history.

If you run a full text search with the words Pancho and the ticker you will see at what prices I shorted covered my positions. I am currently under water with YHOO, AOL, BFIT, ACLY. Gains in others more than make up my loses. And IMO this will change.
