Yep, it's a mess. Medication pricing is all over the place. I think, better that go socialistic, we should try hitting them where it hurts. You did the right thing by questioning the pharmacist and refusing to pay the obscene price.

There are several web sites that help with this problem. One of them is

GoodRx.com

I just tried pricing Clobetasol 0.05 ointment for my area and found a few places where they'll sell it for about $30 for a 60g tube. "Cash price" is quoted as $460.

That's wild, but not unusual. Often, such Internet prices beat the lights out of the famous "negotiated" Medicare Part D prices. The web price is cheaper than the Medicare copayment.

Also, there are many Canadian mail order pharmacies that offer prices on both brand and generics that are often better than anything in the US. They keep threatening to make them illegal, but as far as I know they're still in business.
