Thanks for the tip, I just did a quick defrag and stopped it, and the heads really more all over I will do that as part of the operation of the drive.

Another issue to consider is that most modern disk drives feature a RAM cache, often several Mega Bytes in size. If the data that's requested has already been read, the drive's electronics may deliver the data from the cache instantly instead of reading it from the magnetic media. This brings a huge improvement in apparent disk performance, but it also makes videos of the disk in operation rather dull.
