Well, first I'd personally like to wish all you Cymer Longs and Calls a happy and prosperous New Year. To the Cymer Shorts and puts, I wish that you get everything you've got coming.
With that out of the way , Business Week a yery informative issue (jan 12th) page 88, re: Computers& Chips. Obviously it starts with the Asian crisis and how, specifically the Eqp makers stocks have been crushed. It also goes into how these stocks shot up by the earlier promises of a strong recovery, by almost all the guru's, and now with the Asian disease ( it started as the Flu) is now showing signs that could trigger panic.
" That could be especially painful for suppliers of chip- manufactures gear. Their stock has been slammed by Wall Street since Oct. Asia accounts for 54% of global semi-conductor capital expenditures, so Morgan Stanley, has halved its growth forecast to around 10%.
Now comes the good part. OVERREACTING. Sounds bleak-- until you put it in perspective. Even at lower-than-hoped-for growth rates, the computer and Semi duo is expected to expand nearly three times as fast in 98.
Whats more, many high-tech say Wall Street has overreacted to the Asian mess. James Morgan (ceo Applied Material), figures his sales might get nicked 5% if Korea slashes spending on chipmaking equipment in half, a retrenchment he considers overly pessimistic.
Oh speaking of Mr Morgan, on an interview on Cnbc, a few weeks back that I was watching, they asked him, Will 98 bring the acquisitions in his Sector that lots of analyts are predicting? He replied that in Amats case he felt they had the expertise inside to grow rather than acquire. They then asked did Amat lack any niches that he might want to acquire? Yes he replied "LITHOGRAPHY".
Could Amat get a Cymer cheaper a Year from now?
I'm done for the day (thank you they all say), but I'm betting we will see better prices (slower albiet, than we'd like) in 98.
Oh pass pass, only 850 shares? Gee! earlier I thought you were at Risk.
Good luck to all Cymers (longs and calls of course).

P. Prazeres RE: Canon and Cymer

"Why doesn't someone call Canon and ask if the light source for the EX3L is from Cymer.."

Since the 3000EXL3 is bases on the 3000EX platform it is definitely
a Cymer laser at the heart of it's illuminator. Cymer is also designed into Canon's EX4 and it's unannounced EX5 system shipping in
late 1998.
