Related to the standard RSI(14) there's an indicator in MS called DMI (Dynamic Momentum Index developed by Tushar Chande-- not to be confused with Directional Movement System by Wilder). It uses variable time periods based on recent volatility rather than fixed at 14 or 10. Put it up alongside an RSI and observe how they compare with each other. Extreme movements both high and low in the DMI seem to pull back much quicker in the short term than those of the RSI. Another indicator to experiment with.
