An interesting article in jan 12th issue in Business Week (page 89) re: Mixed signals on DVD's. Basically the short version reads like this, Japan's consumer-electonics giants think dvds will be a smash hit. The trouble is, shoppers aren't snapping up dvd players. Japan predicted sales of 600,000 units in 97. But only half that many were sold, and U.S. sales are also slower than expected. The article goes on to say "Does anybody really need a DVD?" The skeptical say, " The only good point is that the sound and picture quality is better (than VHS). DVD has three marks against it. (1) DVD players don't record (not for 4-5 yrs). So videophiles can't swap out their current VCR's. (2) Not enough movies out there (movie studios say there are 500 titles out. But not all NEW films are released on DVD. (3) There's a problem with standards. In the U.S an alliance that includes Circuit City, Matsushita, Thompson and several film studios is pushing a rival DVD format called DVIX (digital video express), which is only partly compatible with DVD.
Back to the more positive comments. Toshiba says, that it took audio cd's three years to reach the sales level that DVD has achieved in less than a year.
Toshiba blames the DVD problems on weak marketing. Now, mfgs are planning a TV ad blitz.
Sorry got to run to watch the Rose Bowl.
Happy New Year
Oh, never heard from Cube re: CES, it really does make you feel that they don't give a shit about their shareholders.

I guess I need to know your defintition of a bear market. To me, a bear market lasts at least 2 full years and the general market drops at least 15%.
Generally, if an investor has a 3 year outlook, bear markets are great times to be buying, if one has any money to do so. But usually not small companies like this one, or at least not until the market starts to come around and they have survived.

Hi Rarebird:
I believe your caution is well founded for the 4th Q results for many
companies and 1st Q an acid test. I have traded cube on a small scale
and regretted missing the 7/10 to 10/10 run. My question to all the longs
looking for an immediate recovery to 20-25 is: what prompted that x2 of
cube price?
Any fundamental reason for the move that has been quickly discounted?
IMHO more the MM's and momentum players setting up a short position -
PAIR the same action. Read thru the last 6 mos of the CYMI thread -
price action a function of many factors.
I like the company, rare mention of DiviCom - best to all in 98.
