GPS has not offered a new capability in over-ocean flight, just more accurate and efficient as you say.

Efficiency is the name of the game today. estimates for fuel savinggs run into the billions of $'s.

Yin, re: GPS on trans-oceanic flights

I remember hearing at a GPS conference a few years ago that when (if?) GPS becomes standard equipment on commercial airlines, planes can be spaced 100 nm apart rather than 300 nm. (or something like that). This application of GPS does not require the sub-3m accuracies that are the holy grail of automated landing, but may have just as much economic benefit.
