I don't know how they do it, but email addresses are hard to control. They can buy lists. They know how to program anything.

I have a friend who's 89 and uses his iPad regularly to stay in touch through emails and Facebook. He gets messages like that all the time. And he even called one of the numbers because it sounded so dire - just like yours. Indian accented guy on the other end of the phone who tried to confuse him. When he said he needed $500 to fix all the problems and would take a credit card number, my friend hung up the phone. He said he figured he could buy a new iPad for that amount. Guy on the phone kept referring to his computer, rather than an iPad. I think he's learned his lesson.
