Ocam's Razor solution. Most obvious was the cause - mechanical failure. Fixed under warranty at local Apple Store. Painless except for the time - one hour wait for in store repair. Not bad repair turnaround.

Store was packed on a Sunday afternoon. Seems like Apple business is good. That said, this is the 2nd warranty repair on an iPhone in 3 months.

I must say that environment at an Apple Store is really an experience.
