Reasons for using a VPN. There are several. I'll link a few articles below. One I can think of is, due to FATCA laws - Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act - many non US based brokers and banks refuse to do business with USA citizens and they close non US based accounts and/or limit online access to non US based isp's due to burdensome IRS reporting requirements. The reverse is true as well.

You can search for info regarding FATCA and CBT - Citizen Based Taxation - if you're interested. It appears that FATCA and CBT is the primary reason a record number of expats are renouncing their US citizenship.

Etrade is one example. I logged into my US based Etrade acct. while traveling in Denmark and they locked my account due to suspicious activity. Etrade closed all non US based business a couple of years ago due to FATCA and allow access through US based isp's only. Some US based banks have done the same. USA Expats have many legal hurdles and access to US based broker/bank accounts and info is one.
