Stockman,
NSM makes money on chips that cost a dollar. You have been brainwashed that you have to sell chips for $268 in order to make a profit.
Gillette makes a ton selling razor blades. 6 for a couple bucks.

Integrated processors are problematic. The issues that killed the Intel 386SL and 486SL are still valid today. It is more cost effective to build the processor on the current generation technology and place the IO functionality on second chip built using last year's technology. For example if processors are being built in .25 micron fabs, then you build your IO component in a .5 micron fab that can't be upgraded.

This obviousily begs the question why build an integrated processor in the first place if it is not as cost effective. The answer is the customer (Compaq) asked for it and smaller margins are better than no margins.
