9/30/16 Contest update
When the “Big Debate” finally ended only Trump’s sniffling had anyone thinking about drugs; e.g., cnn.com
Still, despite no hectoring by Hillary about high drug prices, it was not a huge week for biotech stocks.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -15.93% YTD (vs. down -15.26% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -14.50% YTD (vs. down -11.92% YTD a week ago), while the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -5.68% YTD (vs. down -2.99% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 6.08% YTD (vs. up 5.96% YTD a week ago).
JBOG’s portfolio, up 32.35% YTD, remained in first place, but second place DNAJOE’s portfolio, up 31.28% YTD, almost grabbed the lead getting a boost from both AUPH & GWPH.
STEVEL’s portfolio, up 11.37% YTD, had a good week and moved in to third place .
At Friday’s close, 9 of the 58 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 25 portfolios beating the NBI and 14 beating the SPSIBI. The 223 Contest stock picks had an average YTD loss of -9.24% and a median YTD loss of -20.00%, with 68 of the 223 Contest portfolio stocks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week, ranked by % Gained and % Lost. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: MDVN buyout by Pfizer at $81.50 per share closed. I reallocated proceeds using 9/30/16 closing prices. Only a single portfolio, BMAZ, held MDVN.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
I will post Q3 closing data shortly.
Enjoy the first October weekend biotechies! And to those who celebrate Rosh Hashanah, all the best for a sweet 5777!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
