Did anyone see the ad on Fortune Magazine about SYQT's SparQ drive?

If SparQ is selling so well, how come it has a less shelf space than Iomega and why it did not sell as fast as Iomega Zip drive from channel check at CompUSA?

Rod: I work at a large law firm. We have 14 jaz drives in our word processing and other data processing areas. About every 2 months or so, I make a point of going up and talking to our technical people about the reliability, problems they encounter, support from the company, etc. They think I'm crazy, of course, but have reported to me on every occasion that they have encountered no problems whatsoever. These drives are heavily used by the way. I have asked each time whether they would consider changing to the Syquest products and have even showed them the ads. I have been told no on each occasion.

So, very unscientific to be sure, but one experience in the real world.

P.S. Rod, I remember you very well from the DIMD boards earlier in the year when it blew up. I sold out at that point and just sort of forgot about it. Did that dog ever recover? Did the shareholders sue them?

>>I don't think it's any mystery that IOM products are extremely unreliable and that's certainly been my experience and the experience of others I know with the products.<<

Rod -

How nice to see you back.

Funny that the experiences of Iomega product users I know are overwhelmingly positive. I do know a small number of Jaz users in the Mac support department of a large international brokerage/investment bank who reported having some trouble with Jaz cartridges. However, these turned out to be due to SCSI driver conflicts. Something that affects SyQuest drives as well.

At that same firm, the network and PC support groups use Jaz all over the place, and so do the brokers, traders and even Senior Managing Directors. They all love their Iomega products.

I also know many people in the magazine publishing business in New York, where once again Iomega products are common and well-liked. Basically, these people take their Zip drives for granted. They just use them all the time. They buy a lot of disks. The ones who have Jaz drives have no complaints, but Jaz drives are less common.

To add to this, the Zip and Jaz drives owned by me and my wife have never given us any kind of problem.

Anyone who believes that the few hundred (at most) users in some newsgroup represent "typical" attitudes doesn't know a lot about newsgroups or a lot about people. People who are completely satisfied with their products don't need to search through the byzantine world of newsgroup threads.

BTW, have you checked the SyQuest newsgroups?

- Allen

>>I don't think it's any mystery that IOM products are extremely unreliable and that's certainly been my experience and the experience of others I know with the products. I'm not sure if it's mostly the hardware or mostly the software but both are sub-standard even for a Windows product.<<

This is your first post to this thread, at least recently. How can you expect not to get hostile responses when you make the statement "I don't think it's any mystery that IOM products are extremely unreliable?" This is clearly an unsubstiantiated comment which you know will provoke rebuttals from IOM longs. Clearly there is some mystery left. How can you now complain about your treatment here?
