Well less, a problem is that if you possess a weapon, you are 3 times more likely to be killed by one than someone who doesn't. So the idea that having a gun makes you safer seems flawed.

Now granted, a fair percentage of that increased risk of mortality is because of suicide. Much of the rest is homicide by a domestic partner. But still, the whole defense idea seems to be not a factor at all. Especially in light that women in particular have a high rate of mortality by a domestic partner or other significant other. Providing a ready weapon to them seems like a bad idea.

I suppose you can take the position of Doonesbury's Uncle Duke...
