"The sum total of what he pays in taxes is likely astronomical." The sum total he pays in income tax is likely zero. Unfortunately for Trump, almost everybody can understand this, which is why he's keeping his as secret as possible.

Or its just a blind stupid statement, "He's rich, therefore I'm certain he pays an astronomical amount in taxes.". The real question is, does Trump pay his share of the taxes, or does he pay a much, much lower share than you and I? And does he pay any federal income tax... you know, what goes to our national defence, etc.? The answer seems likely a much lower share, and in the case of Federal income tax, we have records of it being zero. Which is why Trump refuses to release his tax returns, a break from precedent.. Funneling business payments into his charities, and then using the charities to cover his business debts, buy property for himself, and make legal settlements is just one way Trump does this - which has been established.
