Josh, when they're old enough to go places alone - so they can call for emergency help
the appropriate time for kids to get their own phone.

That is a very interesting question. It would be very difficult to be a young parent these days. Limiting TV time is one thing, but limiting internet time is a whole new, and dangerous-for-children ball game.

I have heard it said that some parents want their very young children to have phones so that they can "call home" or be called. I question that reason. Do parents allow their very young children to be out of their (or another responsible adult's) care?

As kids get into pre-teen and teen years, the decision would be even more difficult - unless they were given an old-fashioned phone that does not have internet. (Do they still make them?)

But to put aside all the various problems and respond to your ideas, I'd have to arbitrarily pick the age of 12 for having a first phone.

All that said, let the laughing begin. :)
