The problem with the "we are broke" meme is that it's not believed. Nobody knows just how far we can go in debt and still stay afloat. Most of us would have thought a decade ago that we could not have gone as far as we have.

Trump's approach of staying on generalities has worked. Unfortunately, his constant bringing up of "Miss Universe" plays right into Hillary's hands. Her approach is, "if he will blow up over these little things, what will he do at 3 in the morning?"

Who is broke? The US government can borrow out to 30 years at effectively 0%.

Austerity has no credibility as economic policy. It has ruined economies of Southern Europe. It would have ruined France's except she refused to do austerity. Situation for UK and US would be much worse cuz they only did austerity lite.

In hard times everybody is saving/paying down debt and causing less economic activity - introduce austerity and economic shrinkage is worsened and folk try harder to save/pay down debt and the spiral to depression accelerates.

Austerity since 2008 crash is irrational.

My biggest problem with Trump is that I see nothing in him that recognizes we are broke. That said, I recognize anyone saying we are broke and need austerity is not going to win anything.

I could not believe my eyes when I read that. It tells me that you have not listened to much of what Donald Trump has said over the past year.

He has repeatedly pointed out that we are a debter-nation and, have a $20TRILLION NATIONAL DEBT - and yes, that "we are broke."

He has repeatedly stated that he wants the countries that we defend to pay us for it; he wants NATO to pay up; he wants to stop nation building so we can rebuild the US; he will stop the totally unfair trade balance and bring money and companies home.

That is all off the top of my head, and MUCH more could be added about getting the economy going with tax cuts and jobs brought back to this country.

But I would ask that if you are a Donald Trump fan, please do not do him damage as the dishonest-media does. He really gets quite enough of that.
