Athletes and hairdressers...

I can appreciate the ambiguity in the athlete's part, and deep down, I know that she is really saying:

"I will accept nothing less than [the accomplishment of my goal, which is to finish with no more than] a time of 1 minute, 12 seconds."

However, the proximity of the "less than" to the quantity in question exerts a force in my brain that pulls in the opposite direction of the intended meaning, and in this case, overpowered it.

Still, I can't seem to wrangle the hairdresser's statement the same way and let her off the hook.

"We ask the customers wash their hair at least [???] 8 hours before their appointment".

Also, I'll grant you that "stadiums" has crossed into the realm of acceptability, but I still hear "stadia" often enough that my brain feels comfortable with it.
