Mq, I'm pretty sure you and I debated about Gorbachev in the years past. He wanted a better, stronger, more competitive USSR. He didn't want to see it disassembled. It took a lot of pressure and persuading on the part of Reagan - including breakups in negotiations, anger, open conflict, the Star Wars scare - before he embarked upon the Perestroika. Which, again, was intended to make the Soviet Union stronger.

About Western style socialism... I think when, some years ago, Putin gave a talk at Davos, advising the western nations NOT to go by way of socialism, he meant it absolutely seriously. Everyone thought it was very funny - a former Soviet spy lecturing us against socialism. But, considering what you pointed out, the joke was on us......
