Mel Gibson’s New Christian Film Receives 10 Minute Standing Ovation

Actor-director Mel Gibson’s new Christian-themed film received a 10 minute standing ovation at a film festival where it was shown.

The film is called Hacksaw Ridge and tells the real-life story of Private Desmond T. Doss who joined the army during World War II to save lives instead of to kill others, due to his Christian faith and beliefs.

Doss initially suffered ridicule from fellow army privates and officers for his pacifism, but eventually gained respect due to heroic deeds, despite his refusal to carry or use a weapon.

Gibson agreed to direct the film two years ago, saying he wanted to make another Christian film. Gibson saw widespread success with his 2004 film The Passion of the Christ. He is also reportedly working on a sequel to that film which will continue the story with the Resurrection.

Hacksaw Ridge premiered at the 73rd Venice Film festival where it received positive reviews and an enthusiastic standing ovation.
