I think you're right, but he must remember that when one incites a crowd into a frenzy, unfortunate and unpredicable events often transpire. By playing this wikitease game, instead of half the world calling for his head, everyone may ultimately call for his head. Where he found sympathetic friends and allies before, he may find cold indifference and apathy to his message and plight.

My conjecture is that he may be extorting the central players over the release of the information. For example, he may have told the Clinton camp, "I have this specific information on you and this specific information on Trump. How much will you donate to WikiLeaks if I withhold the info on you and release the info on Trump?" Then, he may have delivered the same message to the Trump team. Or, perhaps he is talking to TPTB instead, who wield far more power than politicians. Assange wants his freedom, immunity, and money. Who can deliver?

There are no facts to cite. It's all conjecture filling an information void.
