You are absolutely right about calling this a "flat a". Personally I love a Virginia drawl, as opposed to a Texas one; I find it graceful and fluid and soothing.
As for the schwa, I was getting too nitpicky. Uh is usually associated with the short u sound and is accented while schwa is the unstressed version, a very colorless, nothing sound, but necessary for rhythm and contrast. There's a saying in diction that all vowels lead to schwa.
Must the winter come?
'Must' is the short u and 'the' is schwa.
Anyway,I apologise for getting far afield from spelling and grammar!
