Article on Korean investments in Cap. equipment. Looking to delay purchases until the won appreciates.

techweb.cmp.com

Also discusses the Debt/equity of the large korean conglomerates.

"The big three reported a total of more than $13 billion in debt in 1996,
the last year financial figures were available. The companies'
debt-to-equity ratios in 1996 far exceed those of electronic companies
in other countries. Hyundai's debt-to- equity ratio is 439%, LG
Semicon's is 346%, and Samsung's is 268%. By comparison most U.S. chip
makers have a debt-to-equity ratio of about 40%. "

BTW, AMAT's D/E is 9%

OTOTOT<<My main point was that it was my belief that the K6 could not compete with the Pentium II since it was a 686 architecture while the Pentium II was a 786. How can a 686 compete with a 786? Shouldn't AMD be working on the K7 or K8 instead of undercutting prices on an antiquated(in computer life) chip? Does AMD really believe the computer buying population will not notice? Or am I missing something here?>>

Brian,

AMD is working on K-6+, K-6+3D, and K-7. K-6 matches PII or in some cases outperforms it. AMD will sell every chip they make but Intel with their price cuts is making it nearly impossible for them to make any money. AMD stock has fallen from 48 to 18 in six months. Jury is still out if they will ever make any money. I also own Intel and I do think AMD has hurt Intel's stock price. They have in effect burned me two ways.
