Mohan, re; "What would I rather buy?" For the same price and features I'd clearly buy Intel. In fact, I'd probably pay a couple hundred more. I think I'll be able to buy a PII 266 PC this year for less than $1500 to replace my P54/166. (Which has obvious implications for Intel).
The problem as I see it, AMD's not going out of business. I think I read where Sanders warned the investors to expect big losses for the next Qtr or so. He appears clearly ready to buy market share. And I don't think IBM, Compaq, etc., want to see AMD out of business. It appears to me that AMD's strategy is already reflected in their stock price. But is it reflected in Intels stock price?
I think the next big target for PC makers is to penetrate the remaining 50%+ of the home market that doesn't currently have a PC. (There is also a large market for 2nd and 3rd PC's in those homes that already have PC's).
I see that DreamWorks has written software to take advantage of AMD's K6 3D functions. They claim it runs at double the resolution of a PII. When companies start writing code around a new AMD chip that won't be introduced for a few months I have to think it may be as good as AMD claims.
If AMD doesn't go away, and if they keep responding to Intel with lower prices, where is it all going to end up?

INTC up 2 3/8!

Mohan: INTC is back. THis is not just volatility. This is the start of an up trend. Intel has bottomed out. It has met the competition and subdued it. I say we hit 85 by April. Dale

Mohan,

Compaq is coming out with a PC for less than $700.00 with Pentium chips. What will that do AMD&Cyrix chips.

It will be an interesting test. One thing though, the $699 Pentium chip is a low end, 166 MHz chip, while Cyrix is 220MHz for $799 and AMD is 233 MHz for $999.
