All -

I have just spent some time checking the newsgroups comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage and comp.sys.mac.hardware.storage.

There are a few reports of minor problems with Zip and Jaz, and a similar number of problems with SyJet, EZ Flyer and SparQ. Consider that Iomega sells a lot more product than SyQuest. The fact that there are no more problems reported for them than for SyQuest would seem to indicate that, if anything, Iomega products are more reliable than the competition.

There are also posts from people who respond to the minor complaints about Zip and Jaz by saying that they have not experienced any problems with their drives, or that they have fixed the same problems by downloading the latest drivers.

Problems with early SyJet drives may have been resolved by new firmware versions and changes to the door mechanism, apparently.

Some SparQ users report that ALL disks they have used have at least some bad sectors. Other complaints include a drive just a couple of weeks old starting to reject disks on insertion. This poster said that his first SparQ did the same thing and he was advised to replace it by SyQuest tech support.

Overall, there is no clear anti-Iomega trend, and no indication of serious reliablity issues.

I do note from this thread that there is a demand for EIDE Jaz drives, which I wish Iomega would address. Also, the fact that SparQ and SyJet offer more storage than Jaz for the same or less money is not going unnoticed. That's another thing I believe Iomega will have to deal with.
