Apparently the quota has just been raised from 750 to 1000/year. The population of NZ is about 5 million. Scaled by the US population of 320 million, that would give about 64000/year. But there is another consideration. It is actions by the US government, in particular the invasion of Iraq, that have led to the disastrous situation in Syria, therefore the US has an extra moral responsibility to take care of the victims. <edit - here's the link I forgot to include> stuff.co.nz
