The only problem is that it is likely to be something that compromises functionality. Remember Stuxnet? That went off the reservation. But it is an example of what we can do and the Russians probably cannot. It is a problem because Putin strikes me as one of those who responds to challenges by escalating things in the belief that he has a greater tolerance for risk than his opponents. He is obviously not a fan of Sun Tzu and doesn't comprehend the wisdom of not backing your opponent into a corner. This was the thinking behind hitting the 'reset button' of the early Obama administration. It was a gamble that by offering Putin a graceful way to de-escalate the growing tensions and save face. It didn't work. The fact of the matter is that Putin cannot rebuild the Soviet Union. The just don't have the resources. Yes, they have gone on a program of rebuilding their military. But even before the sanctions and the drop in oil prices, Russia just didn't have the resources to match the US, much less NATO. Sure, the Armata tank and the PAK FA fighter are cutting edge, but it doesn't make a difference if they can only afford a couple of dozen of each. It really doesn't matter whether or not they can go toe to toe with the best of the West. The West made a tactical error in pushing NATO to the Russian borders. Especially in the wake of the rounds of humiliation Russia was put through in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Putin was the natural result of what we did to Boris Yeltsin. So in some respects, what is happening with Russia is karma. It still doesn't change the fact that Putin is engaging in brinkmanship. He seems to think that the West is unable or unwilling to counter his moves. He is wrong. Whether or not he is dead wrong is still to be seen. A classical error in history is the believe that if one side is brutal enough or bold enough that their opponents will cower in fear and not fight back. That can be true initially, just look at Nazi Germany being able to take most of Europe, although the fact that most of Europe was composed of smaller militaries than Germany didn't help. But when he pushed the Soviet Union, which had a much larger economy and military than Germany, to the wall, well...
