I have seen that way of measuring humanity many times.

But I would use different variables. The variables you used can be the result of the actions of just a few people e.g Hitler, a few leaders and Curtis Lemay.

So I would use variables that reflect better the human species as a wholee.g. levels of racism, acceptance of the LGBT community, treatment of prisoners, social safety nets, death penalty and thinking of the young.

"Today life is much more civilized and humane..."

If you don't think about the previous century. I just watched a doco that included a brief mention of the firebombing of Dresden. About 30,000 people incinerated in one night. That's just one small episode in a catalogue of horrors. The Nazis killed millions (as did Stalin and Mao), and Germany would have been considered one of the most civilised countries. We definitely have made great progress in our ability to destroy things and people.
