Thanks. a long time ago, I worked as a shop manager for these guys.sports.coral.co.uk and this was about 30 years before the internet. Betting gangs (as we used to call them) did sometimes come into the shop. When a string of strange faces would come into the shop, and all bet large on a long odds horse we would call them in (to head office). Sometime we would take the bet, all of them, and sometime they would win, and more often they didn't. No such thing as a guaranteed winner -g- We all liked an occasional bet ourselves, and we would place our bets with the William Hill shop further up the road, and they would bless us with their bets. Competition was keen as we all were well steeped in the form of those days. Everything was a huge laugh of course, especially when your are young, but there was a steady stream of gamblers coming into the shop who would lose everything, and I mean everything. In those days we would only take cash, no cheques or credit cards, and door had to be closed to the street to prevent advertising, as gambling was regarded as a bad habit which it can easily become. Even so, there was a steady stream of people who became hooked, even in that controlled environment. These days of course you can load up a few credit cards on your mobile phone, and can lose everything in just a few minutes. It's just one of the remaining few ways of shaving the last penny out of joe 6 pack now all the good jobs have been shipped overseas and he/she has lost so much already. That's evolution for you I guess. In those days, we used to focus on the track the horse was run, the jockey who was riding on it, the weather, and beaten favorites (BF) and second favorites (2nd) on handicap races were almost a steady form of income. There was attendant risk of course, and one always had to be wary of that. Form changes over time as well.
